Intro to The Handmaid’s Tale

As we discussed in class, The Handmaid’s Tale is:

  • dystopia

  • an imagined place or state in which everything is unpleasant or bad, typically a totalitarian or environmentally degraded one


  • The use of humor, irony, exaggeration, or ridicule to expose and criticize people’s stupidity or vices, particularly in the context of contemporary politics and other topical issues


  • the advocacy of women’s rights on the grounds of political, social, and economic equality to men


  • Due Wednesday, 10/12 for B2 & B4
  • Due Thursday, 10/13 for A3

Piggybacking off our conversation in class, choose one dystopian book, one satirical book, and one feminist book that is NOT The Handmaid’s Tale that you are interested in reading on your own in the future and explain why. Your explanation should be at least 4 sentences and should demonstrate that you have researched the book’s plot summary and themes. This homework assignment is worth 50 points.
